The Story

This coming-of-age story takes us into the inner life of a young boy at the crux that is all too familiar. Do I close like the men around me or do I move toward the embrace of community? This film lives in the quiet moments of that decision. The inner struggle of growing up too fast often happens much earlier than we realize. 

We meet Cory in the throws of this. His parents are newly split, and he’s caught between wanting a relationship with an always too-busy father and a mother trying to keep the wheels on. With his father changing the plan at the last minute and his mother without childcare, Cory is forced to spend the night on the Oncology floor of the rundown hospital where she works. Rule #1 is don’t let Ronnie, the floor supervisor see you, and if she does, disappear. This is routine isn’t new for him. He knows it like the back of his hand. He knew exactly which room to be in and which of his mother’s colleagues will come to move him to the next one without being detected, but he was sure this dance was behind him. 

Frustrated by his situation, Cory deviates from the plan, risking the few pieces of stability he and his mother have.

The Characters

Cory

Cory is a young, bright-eyed dreamer whose life has just been shaken by his parents' recent separation. All that Cory wants is a bit of normalcy as everything is seemingly becoming more and more unpredictable. When he’s forced to spend another night at his mother’s job Cory quickly finds himself lonely and frustrated with his situation. When reaching for his father fails, Cory deviates from the plan inadvertently putting the people he cares about most at risk.

Aleisha

Smart, dedicated, and caring, Aleisha will stop at nothing to protect the people she loves, especially her son, Cory. Life hasn’t given her many head starts, but that’s never kept her from making the impossible happen. She is so close to making a new life for her family of two that she can feel it, but she’s also more scared of it all crumbling than she lets anyone know. This night with Cory at the hospital will force Aleisha to look for help in unexpected places.

Bernard

Having been an inpatient more times than he cares to count, Bernard is no stranger to Station 32. He’s a man who has had as many mistakes as he has successes and he’ll be the first one to let you know. With no family to speak of, his friendship with Cory has caused him to reflect on who he has been. As this hospital visit proves to be his longest and hardest yet, he finds himself wondering “Are our lives defined by our best moments or our worst?”

Ronnie

Ronnie is the no-nonsense head nurse at Station 32, known for her strictness and her intimidating demeanor. She takes her job very seriously and expects the same level of dedication from her team. 

Ronnie prides herself on knowing everything happening with her employees and though she respects Aleisha, she wouldn’t hesitate to cut her if she caught wind of any misconduct on her floor.

With the authentic backdrop of a vintage medical facility and the unique texture of 16mm film, we'll transport audiences back to the chilling atmosphere of the 90s, delivering a cinematic experience that's both haunting and unforgettable.

Taking cues from compelling films like Moonlight, Crooklyn, A Thousand and One, and Minari, 'Station 32' delves into universal themes of identity, family dynamics, and resilience within the eerie confines of an older hospital.

Eddie Hemphill

Writer & Director

Eddie Hemphill is a writer, editor, filmmaker, and producer who has worked to bring creative projects of all scales to life. His work ranges from producing HBO Max documentaries to spearheading globe-spanning viral campaigns to producing Apple Podcast-featured shows. He is currently a Creative Producer for Field/House Productions.

His work has premiered at the Doris Duke Theater in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi; has been commissioned by organizations including Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, the Movement for Black Lives, and others; and has been exhibited in art spaces including the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Eddie seeks to highlight how delicate moments with ourselves and each other are world-changing and revolutionary.

Epiphany Rose Ciers

Producer

Epiphany Rose Ciers, a proud Houstonian, discovered her love for storytelling from a young age. Her journey into the world of film began in her high school broadcast class, where she found her calling in amplifying underrepresented narratives. Immersed in the rich tapestry of Houston's diverse culture, she was captivated by the power of narrative to illuminate untold stories and voices. With a keen eye for authenticity and a commitment to social impact, she brings stories to life through impactful short films and engaging YouTube series such as Code Along by Black Girls Code and GoldieBlox. 

Epiphany's work serves as a platform for voices often overlooked, shedding light on issues that resonate deeply with audiences. As Epiphany Ciers continues to weave her narratives, she remains committed to amplifying voices that deserve to be heard. Through her storytelling prowess, she invites audiences to explore the complexities of the Black experience, fostering understanding and empathy in an ever-changing world.

Ayana Baraka

Director of Photography

Ayana Baraka was the Director of Photography for UNCHARTED, a vérité music documentary featuring Alicia Key’s She Is The Music-music camp, premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival. Baraka was also the Director of Photography for BEHIND THE CURTAIN: ECLIPSED, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira, which documented the ‘herstoric’ Broadway production of “Eclipsed.” Her work as contributing cinematographer can be seen in the Oscar hopeful, THE HUNTING GROUND, Emmy nominated film, UNITED SKATES, and AFTERSHOCK, which premiered at Sundance 2022. Baraka was named a ‘person on the rise’ in Hollywood by director-producer Mel Jones. She is the recipient of the Innovative Storyteller Award from Nashville Film Festival, Culture Catalyst Award from the Digital Diversity Network, and Best Cinematography Award from the Victoria TX Independent Film Festival. Additionally, she is a voting member for the Emmy’s. Baraka holds membership in both the IATSE Local 600 and IBEW as a Director of Photography.

Mervyn Marcano has produced award-winning content that has moved and entertained audiences around the world. He enjoys working with talented creative teams that reflect the vibrant diversity of our world. His film and television work has received critical acclaim on platforms like HBO, BET, A&E, Vice, Youtube Originals and more. For over 20 years, Mervyn has served as a leading strategist in political communications, working on social issue campaigns that impact the lives of millions. His cause-related advertising content has received numerous awards: Andy— Gold, AICP Award—Animation, Campaign Magazine— Inclusive and Creative Awards and American Advertising Awards (Silver + Bronze). His belief in the power of storytelling to offer new possibilities informs the foundation of Field/House Productions.

Our Budget Goals

  • Help us ignite production! Our minimum budget of $20,000 ensures every aspect—from casting, production crew, equipment, set design, insurance, and craft services—is covered, ensuring a seamless journey to bring our vision to life.

  • Once we reach our initial goal, we set our sights on our exciting stretch goal of $25,000. These additional funds would also allow us to pay our entire production crew and cast, some of whom are taking this on as a pro-bono passion project.

  • Upon surpassing our initial stretch goal of $25,000, we aim for our second milestone of $30,000. These funds will fuel our post-production phase, covering essential aspects like editing, coloring, sound mixing, music, and score, as well as festival fees, PR, and marketing efforts.
